Vulgar Statistics: Sabres Record in Review

Well sadly, or perhaps fortunately, I haven’t had to destroy anyone using statistics this week.  While this has been good for my blood pressure and the dignity of others, it is bad for this column because it means I haven’t been forced to generate any ideas.  So this week we’re going to run down through some of the interesting, and more disturbing aspects of the Sabres’ record this season.

The Sabres are 14-17-4, good enough for 32 points and 12th place in the eastern conference.  That record breaks down like this:

By Venue

  • Home – 8-10-1
  • Away – 6-7-3

By Month

  • October – 3-7-2
  • November – 6-6-1
  • December – 5-4-1

By Division

  • Atlantic – 2-4-2
  • Northeast – 5-5-1
  • Southeast – 2-5-1
  • West – 5-3-0

By Goaltender

  • Miller – 12-11-3
  • Lalime – 0-4-0
  • Enroth – 2-2-1

In Relation to Special Teams

  • No PPG scored – 5-10-4 (one regulation win)
  • One or more PPG scored – 9-7-0
  • Perfect PK – 8-6-2
  • One or more PPG allowed – 6-11-2

By Shot Totals

  • Outshooting – 10-13-2
  • Being Outshot – 3-4-2 (1-0-0 when shots are tied)
  • Under 30 shots taken – 4-1-2
  • 30+ shots taken – 10-16-2
  • 40+ shots taken – 3-3-0
  • 10+ shot advantage – 5-4-0
  • 10+ shot disadvantage – 1-1-1

By Game Scenario

  • Leading after 1 period – 8-2-1
  • Trailing after 1 period – 4-9-2
  • Leading after 2 periods – 8-1-0
  • Trailing after 2 periods – 2-15-0
  • Scoring first – 8-4-1
  • Trailing First – 6-13-3

Thomas Vanek and Tyler Myers

  • When Thomas Vanek scores – 7-2-1
  • When Thomas Vanek records a point – 9-6-2
  • When Thomas Vanek plays 20+ minutes – 2-1-0
  • When Tyler Myers scores – 4-1-0
  • When Tyler Myers records a point – 7-4-1
  • When Tyler Myers plays 23+ minutes – 9-8-3

The Injuries

  • Without Craig Rivet – 9-7-3
  • Without Drew Stafford – 8-5-2
  • Without Shaone Morrisonn – 5-8-1
  • Without Nathan Gerbe – 6-6-1
  • Without Tim Connolly – 5-4-1
  • Without Rob Niedermayer – 4-4-1
  • Without Jason Pominville – 2-5-2

And the guys that replace them

  • Chris Butler in the lineup – 8-9-3
  • Mike Weber in the lineup – 7-7-1
  • Luke Adam in the lineup – 4-5-1
  • Matt Ellis in the lineup – 4-1-1
  • Colin Stuart in the lineup – 1-2-0
  • Mark Mancari in the lineup – 1-1-1

And Most Importantly

  • When I’m in the crowd – 3-3-0
  • When I’m in the 100s – 3-1-0
  • When I’m in the 300s – 0-2-0
  • All time 100s record – 12-3-1 (Losses 3-0 to Philadelphia (2008), 3-0 to Carolina (2009), 4-3 SO to Atlanta (2009), 4-3 to Chicago (2010))
  • All time 300s record – 2-9-3 (Both wins against Tampa Bay 7-4 (2008) and 7-2 (2010))

So the Sabres need to buy me season tickets in the 100s, make sure Thomas Vanek scores, bench Craig Rivet and Drew Stafford and make sure Matt Ellis and Shaone Morrisonn play and we’ll make the playoffs!

That 40+ shots taken record is pretty frightening. You would think getting an abundance of shots on a goaltender would mean that it would be close to a win, not a 3-3-0 record. Interesting.

Also, you should’ve put the stats with how many points Thomas Vanek gets when you attend. Hol-y shit.
