Stars and Black Holes: Maple Leafs @ Sabres: 11-29-13

This might be the first game of the year that the forwards won.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, he was great, but it wasn’t the sort of head-standing forty save effort that has usually been required to get the Sabres two points.  That being said, and it still being Black Friday (on the west coast), let’s give some stars away.

  1. Christian Ehrhoff – A two point night, including the game winner is a good way to return to form.
  2. Tyler Myers and Ville Leino – I said a bunch of times on Myers that I think the Ruff regime overthought his development.  He was constantly told to focus on his defending and play out of character.  Myers is at his best when he’s given license to roam, and given his physical attributes, mainly his size, stride, and reach, you don’t hate him chasing as much as you would some other guys.  He seems at his best, not playing traditional defense, but skating behind a forward and making that poke check that only he can make.  It can burn you if it becomes a trend, but I think you can live with it if opening up his game keeps the puck out of the D-zone to begin with.
  3. Matt Moulson, Zemgus Girgensons, and Luke Adam – It’s a shame Foligno isn’t slightly more talented and consistent, him, Girgensons, and a player to be named later could create that nightmare line that can bury you with offense or just plain bury you.

Unsung Hero:

  • Matt D’Agostini – A lot of people panned the pickup, but he had a good start and we know he can score if paired with the right guys.  If he can continue to work hard, he seems like a decent bottom 6 guy for a Ted Nolan team.

The Robert Wade Niedermayer Memorial Black Holes:

  1. None – I could pick on Mike Weber a bit for the first goal, or whoever it was that made the pinch up ice that led to the odd-man rush, but I don’t really want to.  The other goal was a bit of a foofy bounce so we’ll just leave this one blank.
  2. None.
  3. None.

Unseen Goat:

  • None.
