Vulgar Opinions: Sabres @ Canadiens (2-2-13) Stars and Black Holes

I used to do this piece over on my personal blog before I shut it down, and then again on Twitter, but that didn’t leave much room for discussion.  So I’m bringing it here, the Criminally Vulgar Stars and Black Holes of the game!  This year, I’m adding new wrinkles, the Unsung Hero, and the Unseen Goat.  As always, first, second and third stars get players a +3, +2, and +1 respectively, and the black holes do the opposite.  Unsung Hero and Unseen Goat will be +/- 1.

  1. Thomas Vanek – Is anyone else awake?
  2. Marcus Foligno – I haven’t really liked his game this year, but the outlet pass to Vanek was solid.
  3. Mike Weber – With Sekera out, he is probably our second best defenseman.  Oh boy.

Unsung Hero(es):

  • Alexander Sulzer – Somehow managed to be the only positive player.  This season he’s looked like the best 3rd pair (playing 2nd pair minutes with Ehrhoff) defenseman in the league.

Black Holes:

  • Tyler Myers, Jordan Leopold – These two have to be sat, split up, or both.  It’s a tough call because the other two pairs are playing pretty well right now.  Sekera potentially missing time complicates things.  If I had to choose, I would probably go Ehrhoff – Sulzer, Myers – Weber, and Leopold – ? as the three pairs and hope to FSM Weber doesn’t turn into his old self.  I don’t know if he’s playing easier minutes or what this year, but he looks fantastic.

Unseen Goat:

  • Drew Stafford – They’re all pretty ‘seen’ right now, but Drew Stafford hasn’t been good once.

Awarding +3, +2, +1, +1, and minus the same for the stars and black holes:

  1. Thomas Vanek (+15)
  2. Jason Pominville (+9)
  3. Steve Ott (+3)
  4. Christian Ehrhoff (+3)
  5. Mike Weber (+3)
  6. Robyn Regehr (+2)
  7. Ryan Miller (+2)
  8. Marcus Foligno (+2)
  9. Mikhail Grigorenko (+1)
  10. Alexander Sulzer (+1)
  11. Jochen Hecht (0)
  12. Andrej Sekera (0)
  13. Matt Ellis (0)
  14. T.J. Brennan (0)
  15. Ville Leino (0)
  16. Cody McCormick (0)
  17. Jhonas Enroth (-1)
  18. John Scott (-2)
  19. Patrick Kaleta (-2)
  20. Tyler Ennis (-2)
  21. Drew Stafford (-3)
  22. Nathan Gerbe (-3)
  23. Cody Hodgson (-3)
  24. Jordan Leopold (-8)
  25. Tyler Myers (-16)

Solid analysis! But what to do with Myers? Two years ago he was the next Pronger, but now he looks just lost out there. Is he getting mixed coaching messages from Ruff and Patrick?
