Vulgar Opinions: Sabres @ Bruins (1-31-13) Stars and Black Holes

I used to do this piece over on my personal blog before I shut it down, and then again on Twitter, but that didn’t leave much room for discussion.  So I’m bringing it here, the Criminally Vulgar Stars and Black Holes of the game!  This year, I’m adding new wrinkles, the Unsung Hero, and the Unseen Goat.  As always, first, second and third stars get players a +3, +2, and +1 respectively, and the black holes do the opposite.  Unsung Hero and Unseen Goat will be +/- 1.

  1. Thomas Vanek – Five points will do that.  He and Tyler Ennis also played 4:00 each on the power play, which made a lot of people angry and has generally been regarded as a bad idea.
  2. Jason Pominville – In addition to his three points, Pominville also played an absurd 23:08.
  3. Tyler Ennis – Ennis’s best game all year.  Two points and three shots on goal.

Unsung Hero(es):

  1. Ryan Miller – As good a four goal game as you’ll ever see.
  2. Mike Weber – Picks up a point and plays 21:09.  I might actually trust him more than other defensemen.  Never thought I’d say that.

Black Holes:

    1. Tyler Myers, Jordan Leopold – Not much point in mentioning anyone else.

Unseen Goat:

  • Drew Stafford – Just not good, although bonus points for apparently elbowing Bruins rookie Dougie Hamilton and pissing off all their fans.

Awarding +3, +2, +1, +1, and minus the same for the stars and black holes:

  1. Thomas Vanek (+12)
  2. Jason Pominville (+9)
  3. Steve Ott (+3)
  4. Christian Ehrhoff (+3)
  5. Robyn Regehr (+2)
  6. Ryan Miller (+2)
  7. Mike Weber (+2)
  8. Mikhail Grigorenko (+1)
  9. Jochen Hecht (0)
  10. Andrej Sekera (0)
  11. Marcus Foligno (0)
  12. Matt Ellis (0)
  13. T.J. Brennan (0)
  14. Alexander Sulzer (0)
  15. Ville Leino (0)
  16. Cody McCormick (0)
  17. Jhonas Enroth (-1)
  18. Drew Stafford (-2)
  19. John Scott (-2)
  20. Patrick Kaleta (-2)
  21. Tyler Ennis (-2)
  22. Nathan Gerbe (-3)
  23. Cody Hodgson (-3)
