Vulgar Opinions: What the NHL DOES Owe Its Fans (NSFW)

Look, I mostly agree with Phil and others when they talk about the various handouts that NHL teams are giving their fans as an ‘apology’ for the lockout.  I’m not here to talk about concession and merchandise freebies and all this other crap teams should be doing.  I am here to talk about how dumb everyone is for getting hung up on those things.

Imagine you’re a teenager, and your parents let you use their car.  Maybe they forget to change the oil, and it breaks down.  No car for them, no car for you.  Eventually they get a new car that is (supposedly) more reliable.  Do you ask them for free cookies?  Do you ask them to take you shopping?  No, you say “GOD DAMN IT MOM AND/OR DAD DON’T BREAK THIS CAR TOO!”

The NHL doesn’t owe it’s fans a bunch of shallow crap, although I commend them for taking advantage of dumb fans and offering it.  They owe their fans a genuine effort to fix the mistakes that have allowed the NHL to become a shitty league that locks out all the time.  (Note: “shitty league” can both lead to “locks out all the time,” and be a separate thing entirely.)  And it doesn’t cheapen it in any way that such things are in the league’s best interests (because so is sating easily pacified fans).

The NHL owes its fans a better effort in several areas; producing a more entertaining product (read: eliminate obstruction and maybe downsize goalie equipment), protecting its players (because speculating about the career of the league’s best player should happen when he’s 35, not 25), and doing whatever it can to stop winning at ‘Biggest Loser: American Professional Sports.’

I don’t care if teams offer discounted merchandise or not, but I would like them to look into the things they can offer (given the unique appeal and history of hockey sweaters) that other leagues can’t match.

I don’t care if they give out free food, but I would like them to consider ways to streamline the food-getting process.

I don’t care if Game Center or Center Ice is free, but I would like to see the NHL become the leader in online sports packages.  (And really, it’s 2013, how can I not pay a fee to watch every single one of my team’s games on my computer out of market yet?  You’re telling me this isn’t viable?  Bullshit, there are transplanted fans all over the place that are just looking for someone to throw money at.)

The bottom line is that the only thing the NHL owes its fans is the same thing it has always owed them (and failed to deliver), a serious commitment to getting better.

And the last line is why ole Gary should be fired…. And then fired again for good measure… No commitment to improving the league….
