Vulgar Statistics: 2011-2012 Best All Around Wingers

01/14/12

And we return to compiling stats for random things with the second part of my sporadic Best All Around series.  This time we’re looking at wingers.

Wingers are (obviously) a different animal than centers.  I know this because they have a W next to their name instead of a C.  But you know who doesn’t?  NHL.com!  Because several of these players are actually centers.  And I’m sure more than a few in my centers installment play more on the wing.  So there’s that.  But…if you’ll look past it; the best all around wingers of this season.

You can check out for yourself which stats I deemed important, but for kicks I’ll post them here as well:

  • Goals
  • Assists
  • Points
  • Plus/Minus
  • Time on Ice
  • PP Time
  • PK Time
  • Hits
  • Blocked Shots
  • Giveaways
  • Takeaways
  • Giveaway/Takeaway Differential

Most Surprising Name At The Top:

Really take your pick.  Marian Hossa, Kris Versteeg, Jason Pominville, these are good players certainly, but I would have been hard pressed to put them near the top of the league, even with the seasons that they’re having.

Least Surprising Name At The Top:

Claude Giroux, even if he isn’t technically a winger.

Most Surprising Name At The Bottom:

Ryan Clowe – for someone who is billed as a great combination of toughness and scoring touch, he certainly doesn’t seem to bring too many facets to his game.

Least Surprising Name At The Bottom:

Thomas Vanek – while Vanek is an elite NHL talent and one of the best wingers in the league, his multifacetedness comes from the number of different ways he can get the puck by your goalie, not from his play in all three zones or his (nonexistent) physicality.
