Game Night! Flyers @ Sabres 12/7/11

The Flyers are in Buffalo. The game is on Versus. It’s game night at First Niagara Center as the Sabres try to avenge their loss to Philly earlier this season. Live bloggin’ the night away.

7:00PM – The Sabres, led by Ryan Miller, and the Flyers, led by Bryzgalov, are on the ice for warmups.

7:11PM – So Zack Kassian is going to be getting power play time while Drew Stafford is in the doghouse, per Paul Hamilton. Courtesy of Matthew Coller, WGR 550’s Amerks correspondent:

7:13PM – Lineup update from Paul Hamilton:!/pham22758/status/144568905308975104

7:35PM – Classy touch by the Sabres to do a little bit in honor of the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.

First Period
7:42PM – Sabres open the first period looking pretty good, pouncing on turnovers in the Philly zone to capitalize on possession. It’s going to take a strong effort by the home team to beat a Flyers squad with so much talent.

7:52PM – It’s mind-boggling, but Christian Ehrhoff manages one derpy whiff right onto the stick of the opposition per game. He already had his one tonight on the power play. Stick-tap to Katebits for that observation.

8:00PM – The Twitter is still gaga over Leino’s power play goal from Kassian and Adam.

8:06PM – I said it before and I’ll say it again – when Joe Finley scraps, he’s going to just sit on a guy until he passes out.

8:07PM – Derek Roy gets away with a clear slash behind the net. Those little retaliatory slashes have been murder for him all season.

8:10PM – Brayden McNabb makes maybe his only egregious mistake of his early NHL career and Miller forces Jagr to make too many moves and blow his chance. It’s still 1-0 Sabres with just under 4 left to play in the first period.

8:17PM – Zack Kassian picking corners like Peter Piper picks pickled peppers and it’s 2-0 Sabres with just over a minute to go in the first.

8:36PM – One night after I decided that, no matter how entertaining, I was over fighting in hockey, Corey Tropp goes yard on Zac Rinaldo to end possibly the most exciting first period of hockey so far this season. Zack Kassian is only a fight away from his first Gordie Howe hat trick after notching an assist on Leino’s PP goal and then scoring his own later in the frame.

Second Period
8:44PM – Ryan Miller getting his mask taken off his head by his own teammate is about the last thing you want to see, but the goalie is fine after a sequence of near-hits, flubbed passes, and sprawling saves.

8:52PM – After an ugly sequence, the Sabres’ lead is only 1 now. It started with Bourdon blasting Gerbe from behind into the boards, followed up with Matt Ellis getting into I think his only NHL fight, and a fluky dribbler rolling into the net behind Miller. For a team derided as soft up and down the roster, the Sabres have responded to Miller’s return to play with a physicality fans were not expecting.

9:06PM – Sabres go up by 3, then surrender 3. It’s tied up on Hartnell’s goal that beat Miller high glove. This Sabres team is nothing if not all over the flippin’ place. Tyler Ennis likely got a bit of a talking to from Ruff about his turnover that gave Hartnell the chance.

9:18PM – Jagr scores and the Flyers go up 4-3. Sabres play arguably their worst period of the season directly after arguably their best. Twitter is blowing up with “That is why they boo, Sabres” comments. Hard to argue after that effort.

Third Period
9:34PM – Just prior to puck drop, the Sabres tweeted that Nathan Gerbe is out for the rest of the game with an upper body injury suffered on the Marc-Andre Bourdon hit. With Cody McCormick recently activated from IR, the Sabres likely won’t call anyone up.

9:49PM – Only 5 total shots in this period so far. It’s like hockey is singing me a lullaby.

9:57PM – SOG still sitting at 5. Sabres fans are getting just a bit cranky. Benny Hill needs to chase a slutty nun onto the ice.

10:05PM – Drew Stafford sighting and it’s tied at 4. He was playing the most snake-bitten game I’ve seen out of him in a long time.

10:07PM – It’s headed to overtime. Lots of fans didn’t see that coming and headed out.

10:13PM – Giroux records his fourth point of the night by scoring the OT GWG. Sabres lose after 3rd period heroics redeemed an atrocious middle frame. Final is 5-4 Philly.

The Flyers were most recently humbled by the Sabres in 2006 and you know nobody in either city has forgotten.
