Vulgar Statistics: Power Rankings Week 5

Hello!  Wherever you may be, thanks for making these Power Rankings part of your day.  Great rankings for you today…

This will be fairly straight forward and there is no personal bias here. I rank the teams in each conference in five categories Points, Goals For per Game, Goals Against per Game, Power Play Percentage, and Penalty Kill Percentage and sum them. The team with the lowest summed ranking (closest to first) is the best team in either conference. As the season wears on points will be weighted more and more as they will grow to become the most true representation of each team’s talent level.

Eastern Conference:

Ranked Too High: No one?  This is kind of starting to look exactly like it should though I wasn’t quite as high on Florida and a little higher on Toronto to start the season.

Ranked Too Low: Winnipeg – Because I think they’re better than Carolina and Ottawa.

Ranked Shockingly Right: Carolina – Ottawa is probably the worst team in the east.  And Carolina is probably just ahead of them.  They’re shockingly similar.  Once great teams with a few superstars that can’t elevate the pile of crap that is the rest of the team.

Western Conference:

Ranked Too High: Edmonton – No way 2.00 goals per game is sustainable.  And when that goes, the ship will sink.  How does a team with all that young offensive talent wind up playing great defense?

Ranked Too Low: Chicago?  How does the number one team in the conference suck this bad statistically?

Ranked Shockingly Right: Columbus – It’s like watching a car accident happen in slow motion…82 times.
