Vulgar Statistics: Power Rankings Week 1
Hello and welcome to my weekly Power Rankings column. This was originally going to be a Friday installment, but with me going back to work, I can’t afford to stay up on Thursdays and wait for all the games to finish. Saturday it is!
This will be fairly straight forward and there is no personal bias here. I rank the teams in each conference in five categories Points, Goals For per Game, Goals Against per Game, Power Play Percentage, and Penalty Kill Percentage and sum them. The team with the lowest summed ranking (closes to first) is the best team in either conference. As the season wears on points will be weighted more and more as they will grow to become the most true representation of each team’s talent level.
Ranked Too High: Buffalo – We’re good, but we still have some work to do. Also I feel like the special teams numbers aren’t up to date.
Ranked Too Low: Boston – This is a good team.
Ranked Shockingly Right: Winnipeg – They might just be that bad.
Ranked Too High: Colorado – Sorry, not happening.
Ranked Too Low: St. Louis – Sticking by this one.
Ranked Shockingly Right: Edmonton – Those young guys have to start playing well together eventually, right?
Final Thoughts: It’s still too early to get much out of this, especially with the special teams numbers so wonky.
