Christian Ehrhoff Follows Robyn Regehr From Northwest To Northeast, Signs With Sabres

After rejecting deals in both Vancouver and on Long Island, Christian Ehrhoff signed today in Buffalo and usurped Robyn Regehr’s brief reign as the Sabres’ newest defenseman.

Broken by Buffalo Wins’ Joe Pinzone, the latest signing by the Sabres keeps moods and adrenaline running high in the Queen City as July 1st approaches. The terms of the deal, as broken by Bob McKenzie, are $40M over 10 years. Courtesy of McKenzie, the contract is structured as follows:

Ehrhoff is an offensive defenseman that skates like the wind and has a bullet shot from the point. The German blueliner has averaged 45 points over the last three seasons and will immediately improve whichever power play unit he inhabits for the Sabres. He’ll slot in with either Tyler Myers, Robyn Regehr, or Jordan Leopold as his partner, giving the Sabres a stacked top 4 going into the 2011/2012 season.

With the signing of Christian Ehrhoff, the Sabres are running out of money to spend this summer and also running out of roster spots for defenseman. If RFAs Mike Weber, Andrej Sekera, and Marc-Andre Gragnani are all retained, the team has 8 defensemen at their disposal. If they want to keep seven defensemen, they could trade away or demote Shaone Morrisonn to clear up $2M in space. If they’re content with only six defensemen, Sekera’s trade value is as high as it’s ever been and could bring back assets for the Sabres if his negotiating rights were to be dealt.

With only 17 hours until free agency begins, the Sabres still have a lot of work to do. All of their remaining RFAs still need to be retained, a couple of UFAs remain unsigned, and the team needs to clear more space if they plan on making more free agent splashes. Let’s see what develops.
