Playoff Race Clusterf**k, Apr. 9

The Sabres beat the Flyers in overtime 4-3, which clinched a playoff berth for the Sabres but cost the Flyers their chance at the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Hurricanes took the Thrashers to task to the tune of 6-1, setting up a doomsday scenario for the Rangers. The Lightning doubled up the Panthers 4-2 to lock themselves into 5th place.

The only spots locked into place are WSH in 1st, BOS in 3rd, and TBL in 5th. Whoever wins the Atlantic Division between PHI and PIT will take 2nd and the other will take 4th. The Sabres and Canadiens are battling for 6th and 7th, and each team plays their final game of the season tonight. The Hurricanes are tied with the Rangers for 8th, but hold the tiebreaker.

Sabres play the Blue Jackets and the Habs play the Maple Leafs in a battle for the 6th spot and an opening round match-up with the Bruins. The Flyers play the Islanders and a win guarantees them the Atlantic Division title and the 2nd spot. The Devils are playing to ruin the Rangers chances at the postseason but if they don’t succeed, the Hurricanes play the Lightning later tonight with a chance to do it themselves.
