Game #81, Flyers @ Sabres: Bloodlines
Tonight’s game is very important. If the Sabres walk away from their contest versus the Flyers with at least one point, they will have punched their ticket for the postseason. Jhonas Enroth is starting in net again, but Ryan Miller will be on the bench as his back-up. This team is clicking offensively and defensively and could head into the playoffs on a three-game winning streak if they sweep the weekend.
What’s more important is what will be going on before and around the game.
Around a quarter of the team’s all-time playing or coaching staff will be walking a red carpet and watching the game in a grand 40th anniversary celebration. In its earliest stages, the Pegula regime has set out to perform major operation on the ailing public image of the organization. So far, everything has been aces and this evening’s off- and on-ice ceremonies are going to go an even longer way to improving the outside perception of the Buffalo Sabres. The amenity and facility changes that will occur this summer will take care of the rest of the off-ice work. It’s up to Darcy Regier and his hockey operations department to finish the job.
I’m getting ahead of myself. With appearances ranging from all-time greats to fan-favorites to obscure plugs, tonight is as much about restoring the team’s bloodlines as it is clinching their playoff spot.
