Playoff Race Clusterf**k, Apr. 4
The Sabres won their first true must win game of the season at Carolina 2-1 in OT, the Rangers upended Philly 3-2 in the shootout in their own must win game, and the Lightning shut out Chicago to keep their late season surge rolling.
As the only two teams left on the outside looking in, Carolina and Toronto are running out of time fast. Their tragic numbers are now 4 and 2, respectively. It’s not enough to just win out, anymore – both clubs need all the help in the world to make it in.
A Rangers win in any capacity mathematically eliminates the Maple Leafs, but moves them past the Sabres into 7th in the process. A Bruins win in any capacity improves their chances at moving into a better playoff seeding, but also helps the Sabres retain their hold on 7th (reg. win keeps Sabres one point ahead; OT or SO win keeps Sabres in 7th by virtue of points percentage tiebreakers). Pick your poison, Sabres fans – root for Boston to help the Sabres in the long run or root for New York to inflict quick misery on the city of Toronto.
