For Your Viewing Pleasure: Nathan Gerbe’s Hobey Baker Finalist Highlight Reel
Nathan Gerbe is finally lighting it up at the NHL level, which is something he did with regularity and flair in the NCAA with Boston College. In fact, in his flashiest and final season, he helped lead the Eagles to the 2008 national championship one year after being defeated in the same game by future (and then former) teammate Tim Kennedy and his MSU Spartans.
Even a blind man can see that Gerbe’s style of play has mutated significantly so that he can survive in the NHL world. He’s developed a pesky streak that’s been useful at all times (ask Scott Gomez how retaliating twice worked out for him) and modified his goal-scoring to be more reflective of the new checking role he’s been given.
He’ll no doubt go colder than the 5 goals in 5 games streak he’s currently on, but if he’s found his niche, he could turn into a 20 goal scoring, pestering, never stopping checking winger that any team would envy. Size issues need not apply anymore.
