Game #59, Thrashers @ Sabres: Down
Feb. 22 is known to hockey fans as the day the Miracle On Ice happened. In Buffalo, Feb. 22, 2011 will be known as Pegula Day.
But that was yesterday and this is today. Tonight the Atlanta Thrashers, themselves undergoing ownership turmoil, will be facing off against the Sabres as the home team tries to put the kibosh on a three-game skid and turn around this homestand.
As first reported by Kevin Allen from USA Today, Craig Rivet is on waivers. Some people expect him to go unclaimed and remain a Sabre in name only while others hope he gets claimed and plays what is assumed to be his final season for an NHL team. My hunch is that he will go unclaimed and be assigned to Portland, where the Pirates are ravaged by injuries (to the tune of 7 wounded, including 3 defensemen).
Prior to the waiver announcement, it was reported that Lindy Ruff will have new line combinations debuting tonight against Les Thrash but the combinations are kept mum. We’ll just have to wait until puck drop to see what the new look Sabres spring on us.
Just a few minutes ago, Mike Harrington from The Buffalo News tweeted that there is an on-ice ceremony at 7:07 and puck drop is scheduled for 7:13. I think we all know what is going to happen. So, Terry Pegula, as the rest of the arena will say tonight – pleased to meet you.
