Double Stars and Black Holes: Blue Jackets And Maple Leafs

01/19/14

laziness

Okay, I’ll be honest, I haven’t kept up on these, mostly because the team is boring and it isn’t too much fun to write the same thing every night.  So instead of promising to do better or something, I figured I’d go the other direction and be even lazier in mailing in two recaps in one post.  Maple Leafs stars and black holes will be first, and Blue Jackets stars and black holes will be second.

Stars:

  1. Matt Ellis and Tyler Myers – Anytime Matt Ellis scores he gets a star.  That said, he had an absurd CF% of 65%.  Myers’s point shot is nothing special, but clearly he’s a pretty good shooter up close.  I wonder how much Lindy Ruff damaged his game by taking away those opportunities.  There is some merit to having a guy on the roster that can provide $5.5M worth of scoring from the back end if not $5.5M worth of consistent defensive play.
  2. Tyler Myers and Tyler Ennis – Myers was a force in that first game as well notching a 61.5% CF mark.  Ennis was as dangerous against the Blue Jackets as he’s looked all season.
  3. Zemgus Girgensons and Christian Ehrhoff – It’s not the hits, it’s the 6 shots on goal.  Long time since Ehrhoff has been here.

Unsung Hero:

  • None.

The Robert Wade Niedermayer Memorial Black Holes:

  1. Mike Weber and Mike Weber – Sink lead balloon.
  2. Steve Ott and Ville Leino – Can’t have no shots against that Toronto team.  Leino is just invisible too often.  16,7% CF against Columbus.
  3. Drew Stafford and Marcus Foligno - Neither one is consistent enough on a nightly basis.  One of them still gets a small pass.

Unseen Goat:

  • None.
