Vulgar Opinions: Run Grigorenko, Run Before We Make You Hate Us (NSFW)

01/13/14

Paul Hamilton Grigorekno

Oh lord, and I thought Sal Maiorana’s racially charged tweet (and since he was so quick to highlight what a consummate professional Russell Wilson is, I’m guessing Sal knew he was heading into dangerous waters) about Colin Kaepernick and his backwards hat was going to be yesterday’s stupid media moment of the day.  (Author’s Note: As racism is worse than a big fucking moron with an obvious agenda, I’m allowing it to retain its crown.)

Anyway, enter Paul Hamilton, noted plagiarist, and author of the above piece of unprofessional garbage.  I’ve left Hamilton alone lately, mostly because who really gives a shit.  He’s such a known quantity at this point that it’s barely worth mentioning him even now.  He makes YouTube commenters look literate, but he’s generally no more or less self-serving than any member of the Buffalo News and when he does his job without tainting it with those things he calls his opinions and when he’s followed by an actual press conference or the ear-cleansing sound of Rick Jeanneret yelling things, he’s tolerable.

But old Paulie gets to be part of the discussion today because Brian Koziol recently asked what people on Twitter would tell Grigorenko to do with this whole situation and my answer was basically the title of this article.  I wasn’t even going to write this piece because the racist, homophobic, or xenophobic Buffalo is such a tired topic, and because it’s hard to come up with any tangible evidence when you accuse a bunch of writers and radio people of being racist, homophobic, or xenophobic people.  (Although posting photos of the white as white can be media would be supremely enjoyable if it weren’t so god damned embarrassing). Somewhere out there is an individual with the patience to develop a ‘Schopp and Bulldog Negative Euro Commentary Corsi,’ but it isn’t me.  And unless one of those guys drops an actual racial slur without the plausible deniability that their own stupidity brings (you know what, I bet Mike Harrington is dumb enough to have a special needs child and not know that ‘tard’ is short for retarded), we’re probably stuck with these asshats.

Any fucking way.  Leave it to Hamilton to post such obvious evidence of how the media in Buffalo tries to cut down European players.  Hamilton, who has long said “Grigorenko” with the same sneering tone that my grandma uses to talk about “the blacks” injected a personal opinion about a player in a discussion where it was not only wholly unnecessary, but did so in a way that painted the player as some kind of fan-manipulating bastard.  Grigorenko can’t, for example, simply be making some bad decisions, as 19 year olds are wont to do, not can be be attempting to make sense of a difficult situation without the life experience to properly handle it.  No, no, he’s shitting on the logo, and trying to play the team and the fans for chumps in the process.

Sigh.  I don’t know what kind of an impact the media can have on the players.  I don’t even know how much of the discussion the media can even shape in a world where more and more people are pursuing information instead of having it rammed down their throats like a…never mind.  My gut tells me that the answer to both is…some.  If you want me to be really honest and draw on my experiences living in other cities, I would say the Buffalo media is largely toxic and as such has created a fanbase that is largely toxic.  It’s a narrative that, if nothing else, explains quite a few things.

Unfortunately I’m left doing exactly what Hamilton is doing, speculating.  Maybe Hamilton’s biased words are just a raindrop that will roll off Grigorenko’s back.  Maybe they’re a raindrop that will be part of the flood of hate that carries him out of Buffalo.  Hell, as Hamilton is a wordsmith only in the sense that he takes the English language and hammers it into something unrecognizable, maybe it’s just bad writing.

But it was a plea for sympathy. And that’s ok. I guess I agree with you overall on everything you said about Hamilton and the Buffalo media and stuff, but I don’t see what’s so wrong with this particular piece of unprofessional garbage (I think it’s fine to refer to all of Hamilton’s work that way, even his less incendiary works).

I thought it was an attempt by Hamilton, a guy who’s never liked Grigorenko, to set Grigorenko against the fans by making it look like he’s playing them a little bit. On top of that it strikes me as somewhat arrogant and a little weird to speak for Grigorenko like that.

Actually in all honesty, I really think Hamilton threw words down and didn’t look at them twice. It was just conveniently timed as I wanted to write an article about the media’s treatment of European players in general and needed some semblance of evidence.

The phrase “The Russian” is one that sticks out to me. That’s what Hamilton, and much of the media, identifies Grigorenko as.

With Hecht it was “Ze German!” and was a bit more playful. With Girgensons it’s “The Latvian Locomotive” but that’s an actual nickname. In a league where we always have it beat into our heads that Russian players are soft prima donas, constantly calling a player “The Russian” just has a bit of a different connotation. And not a positive one.

I wish we could just get rid of Paul Hamilton. Any chance that he’ll retire one day soon? It baffles me that anyone in the Sabres locker room will even talk to him.
