Vulgar Opinions: A Thoroughly Useless And Confusing John Scott Suspension (NSFW)

10/31/13

Yup, total accident.

The NHL handed out seven games to John Scott, a guy who (as far as supplementary discipline is concerned) has no prior offenses.  In a vacuum, it’s appropriate for a hit that was dirty and that concussed Bruins forward Loui Eriksson.  Compared to other NHL suspensions, it’s a little confusing.  Why Scott gets seven games with no priors while guys like Lapierre and serial boarder Cody Mcleod get five is a mystery.  Perhaps the NHL thinks it can get a player like Scott out of the game with a longer suspension, but if that’s the case, why not actually take on fighting, where Scott is going to injure far more people than he does anywhere else.

No, this just smells of typical NHL bullshittery where they decided to hand out the maximum number of games they thought the could get away with to a player with no priors so they can pat themselves on the back for attempting to make the game safer without doing anything that has a snowball in hell’s chance of having a tangible effect.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times.  To make the game safer you need to be strict on the things that yield the most injuries. *Coughboardingcough*  You need to punish heavily for any and all reckless hits regardless of consequences because you don’t want to give a player any reason to dole them out and be held prisoner to the whims of fate over whether or not the victim gets up.  The sport will be safer and hitting will remain because the so-called “best athletes in the world” (and please for the love of god stop trying to sell me that while simultaneously saying hockey is played at too fast a pace to really do something about dangerous hits) will adapt.
