Vulgar Opinions: What If Fans Could Vote On The GM?

As Jeremy White of WGR has noted, the Seattle Sounders MLS team allows a portion of its fanbase to vote every four years on their GM (among other things).  He has questioned whether or not this would work in Buffalo.  The gut answer, knowing most Sabres fans and the media that informs them, is no.  But I’m curious, what if Darcy Regier’s tenure was dependent on a vote every four years?

Term 1

  1. 1997-1998 – 89 points, lost in Conference Finals
  2. 1998-1999 – 91 points, lost in Stanley Cup Finals
  3. 1999-2000 – 85 points, lost in first round
  4. 2000-2001 – 98 points, lost in second round

Tough call, the team’s overall finished certainly regressed, but they made the playoffs each year.  I think he gets re-elected, albeit barely.

Term 2

  1. 2001-2002 – 82 points, missed playoffs
  2. 2002-2003 – 72 points, missed playoffs
  3. 2003-2004 – 85 points, missed playoffs
  4. LOCKOUT
  5. 2005-2006 – 110 points, lost in Conference Finals

I think the 2005-2006 season completely saves Darcy’s butt.  Re-elected.

Term 3

  1. 2006-2007 – 113 points, lost in Conference Finals
  2. 2007-2008 – 90 points, missed playoffs
  3. 2008-2009 – 91 points, missed playoffs
  4. 2009-2010 – 100 points, lost in first round

Another tough year for Regier.  He could get blamed for the loss of Briere and Drury, and the early exit in 2010, or fans could be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see the 2010 team as one on the rise.

Term 4

  1. 2010-2011 – 96 points, lost in first round
  2. 2011-2012 – 89 points, missed playoffs
  3. 2012-2013 – 48 points (82 equivalent), missed playoffs
  4. 2013-2014 – At least 3 points, missed playoffs

Aaaaand he’s gone.
