Vulgar Opinions: Sabres Release New #YOLO Jersey (NSFW)

09/04/13

I honestly don’t know where to go with this.  There are so many aspects to what has happened today spiraling off into the nether regions of the Buffalo Blogosphere that it’s tough to pick just one and even harder to encompass them all.  I guess I’ll start with what we have, which is this:

Fuck yeah.  Since they were using a gross color like yellow, I wanted them to go overboard with the tackiness because that’s the only way you can make colors like yellow and orange and rave green look good as primary colors.  They definitely did that.  Either way I’d made the decision to like it regardless of what the team actually produced beforehand because that seemed a lot more fun than automatically hating it.  That’s not preaching, that’s my personal approach, do what you want.

Of course, pretty much everyone did hate it because once we find something that works, and the original Sabres jerseys do work, we’ll only accept minor deviations that are invisible if you squint really hard.  Remember the original jerseys?  Those were awesome!  Give us that, except a little different but not really.  People are especially critical of the new and forget things like how boring original six jerseys are, and how the New York Islanders logo and colors look like something someone left in a moldy basement for ten years.  Whatever.  It’ll grow on people and they’ll sell a million of them.  I can’t wait to see it on the ice.

Hey designer guy or girl, I think you did alright and I respect your hard work either way.

Worse than the people mindlessly shitgasming all over Twitter are those that think our third jersey is somehow an indictment of the Sabres franchise and a national embarrassment.  Were the teasers somewhat annoying?  Sure.  Was the Ott thing contrived?  Well…yeah.  (Still kind of fun.)  Is it bad that the Sabres are deleting Facebook comments that don’t appear to be overly vulgar or harassing?  Um…yes.  These things do suggest problems within the franchise.  But all our third fucking jersey looking like that means is that our third fucking jersey looks like that.  Pittsburgh won a cup with a penguin with fingers on its chest and Carolina won one with a butthole on theirs.  Let’s not make too much of this.

“I can’t wait to see it on the ice.”

This right here, one million times. I will judge how this thing looks when it’s out on the ice. It doesn’t look that great when placed against an off white brick wall with a stick rack behind it while illuminated in garage lighting. Boo hoo.

No, people don’t hate this because it’s a slight deviation from the original jersey, they hate this because it’s objectively, aesthetically bad. And when something poorly executed is released following a great deal of pub, they deserve to be called out. Also, the negative reaction wasn’t confined to the Buffalo blogosphere, pretty much every hockey personality on the internet had their fun with it. I like how you readily admit that you had irrationally decided to like it no matter what while dismissing all critics as mindless automatic haters. Believe it or not, some of us were more than open to the idea of a cool gold jersey, are able to think for ourselves, and were simply disappointed by the results, not because they are “different,” but because they were very poorly executed. I think the near unanimous reaction from non-biased parties supports that.
