Vulgar Opinions: Rick Dipeitro, Crybaby (NSFW)

For those of you that don’t peruse Twitter all day, Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro recently admitted that his frequent injury setbacks and his being waived recently by the Islanders took a toll on him mentally and he thought about killing himself.  Why didn’t the $67.5 million dollar man simply swallow a few dollar bills?  Moreover, doesn’t he realize that he forfeited his right to being a human being with thoughts and feelings the second he stepped on the ice, and forfeited it even further when he signed that contract?

It’s absurd to think that DiPietro couldn’t simply buy his troubles away.  After all, that’s what money is for.  And what people miss is that at the end of the day DiPietro will still have a dump truck of money, and that automatically erases any personal failures, shortcomings, or mental issues.  Plus most of us would easily be able to handle being immensely talented at something we love, and being unable to use it thanks to bad luck.  What’s his problem?

This sympathy for DiPietro is bullshit.  Everyone knows that all he did was simply mention a hot button issue for the purpose of generating a few tears.  In fact, that he didn’t actually carry through with those impulses automatically makes him worthy of ridicule and a hundred times fouler than Saints Belak, Boogaard, and Rypien.  DiPietro is a pussy who needs to man up because he only thought about it and didn’t pull the trigger, unlike those guys who are victims that we’re worse off for losing.  So don’t even come at me with that “gee, it’s kind of a good thing that he didn’t” horseshit.  If he was dead now, that would be one thing, but he’s not so fuck him and his clearly made up issues.

Author’s Note: For those of you that haven’t figured it out, this is satire, aimed at deconstructing and ridiculing some of the comments that have been made today which, ironically, are the sort of things DiPietro specifically said he had trouble dealing with.  I am not sure how anyone thought that an appropriate response to a player struggling with depression, whether it is temporary or a legitimate psychological issue, was to ridicule him, tell him to man up, or anything short of offering support or shutting up.

It’s astounding how many people think that DiPietro is simply whining, especially considering that if he did kill himself, people would be asking themselves what could have been done to prevent it, much like the deaths of Belak, Boogaard, and Rypien.  Well, not being assholes, and erring on the side of taking mental distress seriously would be a pretty good start.  It may be something temporary that DiPietro will work through on his own and recover from, none of us really know.  But voicing those personal feelings, in a very candid manner doesn’t make him a wimp, a pussy, or a crybaby.  It doesn’t mean he lacks toughness, mental or otherwise.  In fact, I think being honest about your emotions is a whole lot harder than holding up a tough guy face, especially in a hyper-masculine arena where unyielding indifference to pain is seen as the ideal.

The money argument is even worse and shows a fundamental lack of understanding and empathy for someone in a painful situation.  Yes, it solves many problems, but it does absolutely nothing to shield someone from the impact of a difficult situation.  A punch in the face, physical, mental, or emotional hurts just as much when your wallet is fat.

I know, I know, but the last time I wrote something like this no one missed the point, or at least indicated they did so…fingers crossed.
