Vulgar Opinions: Sabres @ Senators (2-12-13) Stars and Black Holes (NSFW)

02/12/13

In which we contemplate who played least worst.  Usually I’m a pretty positive person.  Even last year’s rank team was an overall positive by my stars and black holes.  This year?  Sitting at a cumulative -18.

Stars:

  1. Ryan Miller – There’s nowhere else to go.  The Sabres gave up 31 shots, which is still a lot, and once again Miller kept the game winnable.
  2. Jordan Leopold – For as poorly as he has played the entire season, he had 5 shots on goal and 6 blocked shots.
  3. None – After that it’s just a list of guys who couldn’t get it done.  Myers had one of his better games.  Vanek had 5 SOG, Stafford had 4 SOG, Ennis had 3 SOG in the first period and then disappeared.  Just not good enough.  Guys like Kaleta, Hecht, Gerbe, and McCormick aren’t a threat to score ever.  Ott and Grigorenko should be secondary scoring at this point, not “oh dear god save the franchise.”

Unsung Hero:

  • None.

Black Holes:

  1. Marcus Foligno - Missing on chances, bad defense, can’t score.  At least Stafford put four shots on goal.
  2. Drew Stafford - Do something Drew.  Do something.
  3. Forwards not named Pominville, Vanek, or Hodgson - This was my primary concern when Roy left, and the top line can’t mask it forever.  The talent dropoff is steep, especially when you have Stafford and Foligno playing like dog shit.

Unseen Goat:

  • None.

Leaderboard:

Awarding +3, +2, +1, +1, and minus the same for the stars and black holes:

I think the coolest part of reading this is watching Myers dig himself out of his hole and watching TV simply run away with it…. So we have Darcy. And Darcy ain’t getting rid if Lindy… So what in the hell do you do with this team… There is waaaay to much money and more talent than is seen on the ice for this complete garbage… Is there even a trade out there that could come close to rocking this team into playing like a play off team???? Or are we destined for a top 3 pick?

I think you got to go with it, weed out the garbage at the end of season and hope the next crop of young guns does better.
