Video Review: Islanders @ Sabres 2.21.12

Goal 1 – Tyler Myers from Derek Roy and Jason Pominville  (Sabres 1-0)

Absolutely love the play by Leino.  We need more of the the puck carriers just going straight to the net.  Myers ends up going down low and gets two shots off.  No one even touches him.  Martin is too late before coming in to help and Grabner backs away from the melee in front.  Not exactly the hard working down low play you’re looking for when fighting for a playoff spot for the Islanders.

Goal 2 – Thomas Vanek from Derek Roy and Jason Pominville (2-0 Sabres)

The main play here is Christian Ehrhoff just taking up space in front of the net.  He creates a mismatch and the Islanders are trying to cover 4 men with 3 defenders.  Vanek sets up shop in the high slot and Roy finds him wide open.  Not only that, Pominville is wide open as well.  3 men covering Ehrhoff in front, with both wingers open.  A recipe for disaster.

Goal 3 – Frans Nielsen from PA Parenteau and Kevin Poulin (Sabres 2-1)

This is an easy one to figure out.  You just cannot let a player come into your zone uninhibited.  All Sabres are drawn towards Parenteau and leaves Nielsen wide open on the wing.  Nielsen just seems to put it on net.  Miller is handcuffed and misjudges the shot which goes in short side.  Miller would like that one back.
