Vulgar Opinions: I Think We May Be Stupid (NSFW)

I was sitting through last night’s Devils – Sabres game, watching forty grown men essentially hug each other around the ice and the thought suddenly struck me; what the hell are we watching?  Is this hockey?  We’re idiots for watching this.

I know that some people will point out that it was the Devils and they invented boredom, and that the Sabres are terrible and can’t score…and I can pick on those teams until I’m blue in the face, but to do so would be rather narrow.  This is a problem that affects everyone.  Clutching, grabbing, interference, setting picks.  Pre-lockout hockey is baaaaack (and it really has been since the tail end of the 06-07 season).  I get so sick of watching defensemen obstructing forwards after they dump the puck in, sick of seeing two guys collide ten feet before the boards with both falling over and neither playing the puck, so sick of seeing goalies sit at the top of the crease and let their pads do the work.

You know what we need to do?  We need to eliminate the tactics that allow the players that aren’t good hockey players to be so. That means actually calling obstruction and interference every once in a while, it means forcing defensemen to skate, and it means decreasing the size of goalie equipment so that it stops being a position of angles and starts being a position of ability again.  Scoring will go up, power plays will increase, and it might seem cheap at times, but in the long run we’ll be better for it.  The fans, both purists and bandwagoners, want to see these players use the skills that make them so compelling and so exciting to watch.  Right now, that is barely happening.

And until something changes, we’re just going to continue barely watching a clusterfuck.

Although I agree with your complaints but they can make changes but in 2 to 3 years the interference, clutching, and grabbing will be back. Let’s make some changes that the coaches and players can’t affect. How about go from 82 to 76 games a year? too many games are making games boring because the players are tired. How about every rink taking out the first row next to the ice? Open up the ice and promoting offense. I know this will take money out of the owners pockets but games will get more exciting and in turn make hockey more popular putting more money into the owners pockets. Owners will have to open their minds. I know this will never happen but we can wish.
