Vulgar Opinions: Schopp And The Bulldog Lobotmized Me (NSFW)

I made the mistake of listening to WGR on a non-game night where instead of talking to Rob Ray and doing pregame they just make things up while they struggle to form coherent sentences.  Today’s topic was Ryan Getzlaf and what it would take (from the Sabres) to get him.  Oh boy.

One of them (and I honestly don’t care enough to distinguish who is who), said that the only player they’d consider to be untouchable is Tyler Myers.  Okay, that’s not so bad.  Then they went on to say that they’d trade Thomas Vanek ten times before they’d trade Tyler Myers.  That, is lunacy.  However much importance you want to place on a player with immense physical gifts, there is no way in hell that Myers is that much more valuable than Vanek.  We’re talking about a guy that has put together one good season (and shown only a glimmer of a hope that he can do it again) and that has at times been our worst player in Myers versus the guy who has been our best offensive player for four years, and has only gotten better both on the ice and in terms of intangibles as time has worn on in Vanek.  PLUS Vanek seems to have more leadership qualities than anyone else on a team that has been desperately seeking leadership since the beginning of time.  Are you fucking kidding me?

Oh I can’t wait to hear the justification for this one…

“McNabb and Kassian are untouchable among the prospects.” – What has Kassian shown us other than potential which, by the way, all the players we currently hate HAVE COMPLETELY SCREWED US WITH.

There was, predictably, no mention of how much of the past two seasons Myers has spent being patently awful and looking like he watches Marc Andre Gragnani blooper reels for film study.

No mention of how patently awful most of the “core” players have been, aside from trading the biggest bright spot within that core.  In fact, it was even said that Stafford would be an acceptable filler for Vanek on Getzlaf’s wing because he can “skate down the ice and score goals.”  Um…are you watching this season?

One of those knuckleheads said “The Sabres have had Vanek for years and not won.  He’s had his chance to carry the team and he hasn’t done it,” which might be the dumbest thing said in the history of hockey (aside from maybe “sure, I’ll pay Scott Gomez that much money”).

Call me crazy, but I think trading a great player with intangibles for another great player with intangibles at a different position is a lateral move at best.  The only thing even more jaw dropping than the above discussion was the caller who suggested trading Boyes and Hecht for Getzlaf.  Fuck, I hate you people.

Here’s How I See It:

Not only do the Sabres have one of the youngest teams in the league, but also one of the deepest prospect pools in the AHL.  Needing to draft young players to bring into the system is not as much of a necessity right now.  Trading whatever picks is necessary for Getzlaf makes sense because those picks are of diminished value to the Sabres, and because Getzlaf is a proven talent whereas any number one picks, regardless of how good they may look, are not.  So I send whatever it takes to the Ducks in terms of draft picks and prospects (probably making McNabb off limits and trying like hell to keep Kassian) for Getzlaf.  Darcy, call me.

I was expecting to see a dirty picture with the “NSFW.”

Wouldn’t we need to clear some cap space if we were to trade for Getzlaf?

Yes, you are correct and I should have mentioned cap hit, but I wanted to focus on what it would take to get him here.

Getzlaf’s cap hit is 5.25 I believe; we would be responsible for roughly half that this season depending on when the trade occurred.

Beauty opinion. I understand that those guys have a job to stir up the dumbest possible thoughts regarding both sports teams, but their opinions on the Sabres (in particular) are tremendously ignorant. For example, they argued that Biron is just as good as Miller because on average, Miller is only good for 2 or 3 saves per month over his entire career. It was nice that the coach squashed all of that “research” by pointing out that you only realyl focus on short term, particularly with goalies.

But to get Getzlaf is going to be quite a challenge. Actually, the idea of getting him is challenge. They would need to clear too much space and likely give up more than they’re willing to in order to pull him from the Ducks. A doubtful trade scenario. But it doesn’t mean there are other players on that roster worht a look.

Do you actually listen to the show or do you flock amongst the disgruntled and say whatever you can to put them down? What’s the big deal with hypothetical discussion anyway? Just a joke to hear people rag on these guys for doing their job and just doing what they do, stir up discussion. A day or two before they discussed those things you complained of. I will assume you are just like every other media outlet, taking snippets that help you push your agenda.

Yes, I listen to them frequently, albeit not daily, and less and less as the bills and Sabres have performed poorly. I did not hear the previous discussions you mentioned, but that’s irrelevant because I’m not talking about those discussions, and you indicate the irrelevance with your comment.

Ostensibly you enjoy some of the content here as you are here now, and yet those previous points which you have agreed with have no bearing on how poor you find this discussion to be. Likewise any previous discussions that Schopp and the Bulldog have no bearing on how poor I find the discussion in question to be. And for the record I generally enjoy S/B.

The “agenda” here is, I’d imagine, the same as that of every media source ever, putting a distinct voice out there to be heard.

I also dont see the big deal about calling someone stupid if the point was stupid. I called the sabres cup winners about a month ago. Go nuts on my epic failure.
