That One Time Mike Grier Scored A Breakaway Goal (I KNOW!)
Today, the NHLPA announced that Mike Grier, two-time former Sabre, had retired. Beginning his NHL career in 1996 with the Edmonton Oilers, Grier would go on to play 1060 across 14 seasons with the Oilers, Capitals, Sabres, and Sharks before finishing up his career back in Buffalo.
Throughout his career, Grier was known for his tireless work ethic, hard hits, and MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of blown breakaway chances.
All that changed on February 25, 2011 – the day Mike Grier finally scored on a breakaway. (Jump to :23 in)
For one moment, all the mocking about harmless shorthanded chances and hands of stone were gone in the glory of finally burying his chance all alone in front.
Cheers to a great career, Mike, and may your endeavors in life not end point-blank like so many of your scoring chances did.
