Vulgar Opinions: Trash Talking In Hockey (NSFW)

Let’s talk trash.

So let me get this straight: in 2005, Sean Avery calls George Laraque a monkey (best I can do is this HF thread) and the fan reaction is YOU RACIST BASTARD!  In 2011, Wayne Simmonds calls Sean Avery a faggot and the fan reaction is…meh, or at worst “trash talk should stay on the ice.”  What hypocritical bullshit.  Prejudiced insults are prejudiced insults, you can’t cry foul over one and cry apathy over another with anything even remotely resembling logic.

It’s pretty clear that there are a few things at work here, both are full of prejudice and bias and one is just plain sad.  The first is that people just flat out don’t like Sean Avery because he plays hockey like an asshole and just looks like the dictionary definition of ‘douchebag.’  Fair enough.  Simple minded, but I get how that can carry over into not giving a shit about any ill will that comes Avery’s way.  The second is that discrimination based on race is far worse in the public eye than discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation.  (Of course a lot of this is due to widespread misinformation on the latter subject, but that’s a topic for my blog, not this one.)

As an ardent supporter of LGBT rights, I’m happy that the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is getting involved for a few reasons.  The first is that this incident deserves every bit as much play as the Laraque-Avery incident got (And the Simmonds-banana incident is getting).  The second is that Avery’s involvement with the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign and his outspoken support of LGBT rights could possibly suggest that Simmonds may have been motivated by personal prejudice instead of picking the easiest and most vile insult he could think of to get a rise out of Avery.

Which brings me into my stance on trash talking as a whole: I really don’t care.  Of course theses guys are going to say some awful things to each other, even low blows because (duh) they’re the easiest way to accomplish the objective, unraveling the opponent emotionally and getting his mind off the game.  Hell, I bet ‘faggot’ and ‘monkey’ are probably some of the cleaner things that guys have said to each other on the ice.  I think that in most cases, these things aren’t motivated by prejudice and are exactly what I said, just an effort to get a rise in the most efficient way possible.  The best thing the media can probably do is just leave them alone.

But if the NHL is going to try and legislate the words that are said between players on the ice, then they need to treat things as equals.  Be goddamned consistent.  Hate speech is hate speech, slurs are slurs, whether they’re aimed at Blacks, Asians, Quebecois, Europeans, Americans, Canadians, and yes, even Homosexuals.  Be goddamned consistent.

You are either saying Avery is gay —-or the situations are in fact not the same. Easy solution though, don’t let your desire to see homosexuality accepted by all get in the way of your rational thought process. The reality is that they aren’t the same cases: Avery called Laraque a derogatory term used to describe a black, Simmonds (allegedly) called Avery a term used to describe homosexuals, which Avery is not. Not the same thing, Avery is not the type of person the term allegedly offends. Most would say that is less offensive….like calling a person with downsyndrom a “retard”, versus calling your coworker a retard. Both not appropriate, but totally different situations.

“The second is that discrimination based on race is far worse in the public eye than discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation.”

You are right, the public has a greater problem with discrimination based on race, because race cannot be changed. Even if you believe that homosexual feelings are natural, deciding to ‘commit’ yourself to someone of the same sex or to take part in unnatural acts that homosexuals do, is a choice (and a great many people think an immoral choice). Just like a strong attraction to the opposite sex might be natural, the decision to marry three different women (or your sister) is not right, homosexuality is not right.

For those same reasons, government should be promoting basic morals for the betterment of society: eg. not murdering, marriage between one man and one woman, no stealing.

So let me get this right: Joe thinks that a racial epithet and a homophobic slur are not equally repugnant? It is astonishing to me that someone in the 21st century still parrots hate speech like “homosexuality is as amoral as murder and theft”, or this classic: “homosexuality is a choice and has nothing to do with genetics or biology.” It’s warped views like this that lead to gay teens being bullied. Imagine being told by your peers –people like Joe– that you are homosexual ergo “unnatural” by choice, and that your feelings are shameful? Imagine being told that you’re supposed to change yourself, and and you can’t because being gay is simply what you are? Is it so surprising that kids like Jamey Rodemeyer hear trash like this and turn to suicide? How’s that for a choice? I don’t believe a single word of this nonsense that “Joe” posted anymore than I think he had the courage to post his real name.

P.S. “The league shouldn’t tolerate taunts or slurs which are hateful and hurtful to a particular group in society,” says Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke. “I see no appreciable difference between racial slurs and homophobic slurs. There’s no place in our game for either of these.”

Good for Burke. It’s time to drag the NHL into the 21st century.

I may wipe these comments as they are off topic and not relevant to hockey. However, for now, the above and my response below will stand.

Unless you’ve got shocking new insight into Avery’s personal life, I don’t think we can make assumptions about his sexual orientation. Yes he has been linked to several women, but as we’ve seen with several disgraced homophobic politicians, this means nothing. That Avery was a part of the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign at least links him to LGBT tolerance, and makes Simmonds’s comment closer to being a slur than what has become the vernacular and more benign use of the word ‘faggot.’ But your post wasn’t meant to debate semantics, it was meant to be homophobic.

I will refute your commandment-breaking lies in order:
Despite what your religious leaders have led you to believe, homosexuality cannot be changed either. This is why every single reputable psychiatric agency known condemns Reparative or Conversion Therapy.

Homosexuality has been found to exist in thousands of animal species. In fact, Petter Boeckamn, a Zoologist at the University of Oslo has discovered that “no species has been found in which homosexual behaviour has not been shown to exist, with the exception of species that never have sex at all, such as sea urchins and aphis.” If that doesn’t constitute natural for you, perhaps you need to consult a dictionary to get a better definition.

I would also urge you to perhaps reconsider your definition of “right.” If it’s based on a 2,000 plus year old book that was originally written in a different language that is merely man’s best guess at the word of God, you have bigger problems than the evils of homosexuality.

Finally, I see you bring up morality and lazily reference a few commandments. I would point out that you posted your comment under the e-mail “josesmith123@aol.com”, which is fake. I feel I should inform you that “bearing false witness” or lying is also against the religious tenets you seem to hold so dear, which makes your entire post both hypocritical and confusing. Granted nobody, not even Christians, is perfect, and I could assume that this is merely an accidental sin.

But I really think you’ve cherry picked the biblical decrees you want to follow according to your own biases and prejudices and aren’t a very good Christian at all. Woo woo! All aboard the Amtrak to hell!

If you would please, there is a broom and dustpan in the corner that you can use to sweep up the remains of your self-righteous pedestal. We like to keep things clean around here.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that he cites polygamy as an immorality and then uses Joe Smith, the name of the author of The Book of Mormon as a pseudonym?

The Boss here. Gonna lock this post’s comments, as I should have done it preemptively and the conversation went pretty far off topic.

Also, brochacho, use your real name and email instead of hiding.
