When it was time to fight back, the Pirates came out swinging. The 6-2 final score at the end of game 5 kept them alive long enough to send the series back to the cozy confines of the CCCC.

Dominance on the special teams was one of the biggest reasons the Binghamton Senators went into Tuesday night with a chance to become the first team to land a spot in the Calder Cup conference finals.

Success on the special teams instead allowed the Portland Pirates to escape from New York State and return the second-round series back to Maine.

Mark Mancari had a hand in three special teams goals in the first 12 minutes to spark the fast start that allowed the Pirates to fight off elimination with a 6-2 victory in Game Five at the Broome County Arena.

“We were fortunate to get the first three power plays and we had good execution on the power play,” Pirates coach Kevin Dineen said.

Just a couple more things worth mentioning:

  • Lindy Ruff and Darcy Regier were again in attendance at the Broome County Memorial Arena
  • The last two games were broadcast on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet 13, but there’s no word on whether the last two will be as well
