Sabres/Flyers Stanley Cup ECQF Game 5 Preview: Game Five Is Kind Of A Big Deal
Apr. 23, 2010 BUF/BOS ECQF – The Sabres, down 3-1 on the series, fought like wounded animals and beat the Bruins 4-1 to keep their playoff hopes alive. The night was capped off by a desperation-laden diving empty net goal by then-rookie Tyler Ennis. The Sabres would lose the series in six games.
May 21, 2007 BUF/OTT ECF – The Sabres successfully avoided get swept by their hated rivals by winning game four, only to lose game five by way of an overtime goal scored by noted Sabre-killer Daniel Alfredsson. It was a disappointing end to a high-flying, President’s Trophy-winning team. That summer, co-captains Danny Briere and Chris Drury would leave in free agency and Kevin Lowe’s offer sheet for Thomas Vanek would handcuff the Sabres.
May 4, 2007 BUF/NYR ECSF – The series was tied at 2, but the score that night read 1-0 Rangers. With 7.7 seconds left, Chris Drury scored off a rebound to send the game to overtime and the crowd into hysterics. Rick Jeanneret ‘s goal call was a mix of elation, nonsense, and repeating the Drury over and over. The Sabres won the series in six games.
May 13, 2006 OTT/BUF ECSF – Up 3-1 in the series, Jason Pominville streaks up the boards with the puck and cuts in front of Ray Emery, scoring the first shorthanded, overtime, series-clinching goal in league history. RJ immortalized the goal with his famous “Oh now do you believe?! Now do you believe?! These guys are good, SCARY GOOD!!” call.
So yea, game five is kind of a big deal.
The Sabres are in Philadelphia tied in games at 2 with the Flyers. Games 1 and 4 were low-scoring shutout victories for the Sabres. Games 2 and 3 were high-scoring affairs that ended in favor of the Flyers. Who the hell knows what game 5 will end up like.
Jeff Carter will miss his first playoff game of the year after a knee-on-knee collision with Tyler Myers while Chris Pronger will remain out for the Flyers. Jochen Hecht and Andrej Sekera practiced with the Sabres but neither will play.
Kevin Snow tweeted some stats yesterday that Sabres fans may want to consider…
Stat from Elias today: since 2006, road team is 7-19 when tied 2-2 in Game 5. BUT – the 7 winners have all gone on to take the series.—

A Sabres game 5 win in Philadelphia sets up a massive Easter Sunday showdown. The chance to advance past the #2 team in the conference on home ice in front of 18,690 fans inside and 5,000+ fans outside is at stake tonight.
Jump on them early, both in the trenches and on the scoresheet. Keep pounding Briere and Richards. Just win.
PS: Happy anniversary, RJ Umberger. Cheers to 5 years.
