Black & Blue & Gold On The Beat, Septmeber 22

09/22/10
by

Highlights in today’s B&B&G On The Beat are positive words about Clint Malarchuk, former Sabres scoring in the preseason, and Andrew Raycroft still trying to be an NHL player.

DUCKS BLOG – Lupul gets clearance to work out
Good news from one of the best NHLers on Twitter, Joffrey Lupul is cleared to work out and skate again. Here’s hoping for a full recovery from his back injury.

THRASHERS BLOG – Plenty to work on after Thrashers drop preseason opener
It may only be the preseason, but Ondrej Pavelec is going to have to be better if his team wants any part of the playoffs.

BRUINS BLOG – Bruins release statement on Savard
So ESPN put forward a piece that Marc Savard may miss the entire season with post-concussion symptoms. Peter Chiarelli, needless to say, did spin control. He may be a Bruin and therefore the enemy, but Savard is talented and ought to be on the ice instead of pissed off at home.

CANES NOW – Brind’Amour’s job: forwards development
“Forwards development” meaning not getting crushed by Patrick Kaleta.

PUCK-RAKERS BLOG – Exhibition Game No. 1
The Blue Jackets won 5-2 but the big feel good moment is Clint Malarchuk looking healthy, feeling “better than alright”, and having a job in the NHL.

FLAMES INSIDER – Flames got job done in third
Flames won, no thanks to Olli Jokinen and his penalty minutes. It’s only the preseason and the kvetching over Jokinen begins anew.

CHICAGO BREAKING SPORTS – Blackhawks’ Huet lists condo for $3 million
Holy crap, Huet had REALLY nice digs in Chicago.

ALL THINGS AVS – Duchene, Mueller and Sacco on Burgundy-White game
Matt Duchene got into a dust-up with his captain in camp. Shows moxie. I like it.

STARS BLOG – Krahn, Raycroft set to battle for Stars’ backup goalie spot
Andrew Raycroft still wants to play in the NHL. Awww. Seriously, didn’t he win the Calder? Didn’t Steve Mason as well. Hope his career turns out better.

RED WINGS BLOG – Mike Modano: A random kisser of old guys
The old man has a sense of humor and linemates who probably won’t do much to show he can still game. I dig the former but bummed by the latter.

THE CULT OF HOCKEY – The answers to the top ten questions facing the Edmonton Oilers. What say you?
Damn right the Oilers are facing some serious questions. For the sake of their goaltending corps, I hope the forwards and defense are full of answers.

ON FROZEN POND – Panthers Gamer: Florida 4, Carolina 1
The Panthers won their preseason opener. Nathan Paetsch scored a goal. Sabres should have kept him instead of Andrej Sekera. Florida’s got a great utility pick-up in him.

RUSSO’S RANTS – Wild to dress most its NHL roster in Wednesday’s exhibition opener
Kinda sad that an NHL team already has its regular season roster 95% set. Oh. Wait. Crap…

HABS INSIDE/OUT – Reds rally for 3-2 scrimmage win
This post is worth reading if for no other reason than checking out Alex Auld’s new mask. Seriously, goalie masks are the best.

DEVILS BEAT BLOG – Goalie Johan Hedberg debuts for Devils in 4-3 preseason shootout loss to Flyers
Adam Mair and Dainius Zubrus both scored, and Hank Tallinder had the primary assist on Mair’s goal. What in the heck happened last night? Former Sabres scoring all over the place.

PREDATORS INSIDER – NHL camps open
Picture of Miller and Lalime stretching in the Preds’ beat blog. Why not. Check out the sweet cross-marketing job on the zamboni!

OFF THE POSTS – Invading the Big Smoke
Oh my, that’s ten metric tons of snark at the end of this post.

FREQUENT FLYERS – 5 things to watch in Flyers’ camp
Psychotic stick-swinging episodes aside, I hope Guerin makes it. Dude has still got game and obviously isn’t ready to call it a career yet.

PHOENIX FANSTER – Coyotes sign free agent Eric Belanger to a one-year deal
Remember when Belanger took a puck in the mush and laid down the groundwork for the legend of Duncan Teeth? Dude’s invincible.

EMPTY NETTERS – Michalek on defense, offense and Jagr (and Melichar too!!!)
I like Zbynek Michalek. Reminds me of Jay McKee in his prime. Here’s a long interview with him about playing in Pittsburgh and other stuff. Enjoy.

WORKING THE CORNERS – Niemi still wearing Chicago colors, re-establishing the foundation as Sharks open training camp
Niemi getting bagged on by his new teammates for showing up in his last team’s gear is good fun. Reminds me of when Biron got traded to the Flyers in 07 and was practicing in his Sabres pants…from 05/06.

THE MORNING SKATE – Blues goalie prospect watching Halak closely
Step 1: Warm the bench for a couple of seasons. Step 2: Steal the job with outstanding play. Step 3: ????? Step 4: Sign a lucrative deal elsewhere and profit.

LIGHTNING STRIKES – First look at Tampa Bay Lightning’s power play with a pretty impressive cast
Tampa’s forwards always look good on paper. It’s time they stepped up and looked good on ice, too.

LEAFS NOW – Missing Matt?
Leafs fans have turned on Matt Stajan for some comments he made. That’s funny, I didn’t think Leafs fans needed a reason to turn on you…

PUCK WORLD – Hodgson: “I felt good out there.”
Cody Hodgson is skating and may play some preseason games in order to audition for the Canucks. He’d prop up their depth scoring for sure, and the Canucks sure could use it. Kid is talented, but his back has been a pain in the butt.

CAPITALS INSIDER – Va. chiropractor pleads guilty to steroid charges
Yeah, that’s not so awesome.
